CDBG

The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program provides Nebraskans with safe, affordable and accessible housing and infrastructure; quality jobs and investment through financing new and expanding businesses. Created under the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974, the CDBG program merged seven categorical programs into a pool of community development funds yearly distributed according to a formula weighing population and measures of distress (poverty, age of housing, housing overcrowding, and growth lag). Grantees now determine the activities to be funded so long as activities are eligible and meet one of three broad national program objectives. HUD CDBG rules are found here
under “About CDBG …Community Development Block Grant Program”.

“The importance of the Community Development Block Grant as a key tool for helping local and state officials tackle their most serious community development challenges cannot be overstated. It is all-encompassing, providing funding for public works and infrastructure, safe affordable housing, public services, and economic development growth. We need to continually invest economic development dollars in rural and urban Nebraska to help sustain and grow our vital communities. These grants help Nebraska play a leading role in the ongoing work and issues related to our global economy”

–Governor Pete Ricketts

"CDBG funds are often the catalyst in communities that create the momentum to start and follow through on a project or business venture. As city administrator for 14 years in two small towns, I have seen CDBG funds used to leverage many times more in local funds to provide housing and business momentum in Nebraska communities. CDBG investments creates a united local effort that carries into other projects.”

– Lowell D. Johnson, City of Wayne, City Administrator and CDBG Advisory Committee Chair
